Commenting on the Scottish Government’s response to the review of the Scottish Funding Council, Scottish Labour’s spokesperson for Children and Young People Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“This is a weak and watered down response to a weak and watered down review.

“This review was supposed to radically reform the tertiary education sector, but once more the Scottish Government is choosing a path of inaction and warm words rather than appreciating the scale of the challenges and asking itself fundamental and difficult questions. It is also clear the Scottish Government are aware of this fact, as they chose not to face questions in Parliament while sneaking the response out through a written question.

“The Scottish Government asked for a watered down review to avoid having to take responsibility and now don’t even have the conviction to accept all of the recommendations from it.

“Colleges and universities face significant financial challenges due to long term underfunding of Scottish students. The fact that the government is not prepared to commit to the sustainability of these institutions is deeply worrying and undermines the stability of this vital sector.”
