A Scottish Parliament motion marking the success of Prestonpans War Memorial at the recent Legion Scotland Best Kept War Memorial competition has already garnered the support of more than a dozen MSPs.

Tabled by Martin Whitfield MSP, who is a Prestonpans resident, the motion welcomes the memorial winning in the Large Community without Gardens category at the prestigious awards and congratulates the various local groups that have been involved in the memorial’s restoration and upkeep.

Commenting on the award, Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“I was delighted to see the War Memorial secure this success at the Legion Scotland awards and wanted to acknowledge both the award and the contribution of those involved in achieving it at the Scottish Parliament. A significant amount of work has gone into restoring the memorial and regenerating Civic Square over the last few years, with many groups and individuals playing their part in that important project.”

The full motion reads as follows:

That the Parliament welcomes the success of Prestonpans War Memorial in being named one of the winners of Legion Scotland’s Best Kept War Memorial Competition for 2024; understands that the memorial, which is located in the town’s Civic Square and has undergone significant restoration work over recent years, won in the category of Large Community without Gardens, and congratulates Prestonpans Royal British Legion, Prestonpans Community Council, Prestonpans Bloomers, East Lothian Council and all the other groups and individuals that have been involved in the memorial’s restoration and ongoing maintenance and upkeep on what it sees as this fantastic success.
