A campaign to eliminate cervical cancer in Scotland has received the support of Martin Whitfield MSP at Holyrood.

Launched by global pharmaceutical company, MSD, the #RacetoElimination campaign is celebrating Scotland’s success so far in the pursuit of eliminating cervical cancer and encouraging further cohesive and collaborative national action to end the condition here.

MSD held a reception in the Scottish Parliament today with The Eve Appeal to highlight Scotland’s progress so far, the recent establishment of the Cervical Cancer Elimination Expert Group, and to outline the action that is needed to further advance work on the issue.

Scotland’s HPV vaccination coverage rates, over 90% for S4 girls, are now meeting World Health Organization elimination targets. These efforts, along with UK-leading cervical screening has put the country on track to make the elimination of cervical cancer a reality for the Scottish population.

Recent research from Public Health Scotland showing that no cervical cancer cases have been detected in fully vaccinated women since the introduction of HPV vaccination underlines the scale of the opportunity.

Commenting on his support for the campaign’s objective, Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“I’m proud to support MSD in the UK’s campaign to eliminate cervical cancer in Scotland. It’s such an important campaign that highlights the need for us to reach every community with vaccinations and screenings, and increase equity of access to these resources.”
