2024 will be remembered as the year the public voted for a change of direction. That change has now begun, and we have already started to see the benefits of electing a new government for the UK.
However, we are now only just over a year away from another election, for the Scottish Parliament, which will afford the electorate the opportunity to vote for change here too. I will be making the case for that change throughout the next year and up to May 2026 when voters will have their say on Scotland’s future.
In the meantime, as we head towards the end of another hectic year, I would like to take a moment to thank our dedicated public sector workers, especially emergency services staff, for everything they do to keep us safe and well, particularly those who will be working over the holiday period.
I also want to thank all the amazing local volunteers and charities that do so much for our local communities. Many of my highlights during 2024 have involved local charities. From the first flight of “Sophie” the Strutter, so painstakingly built by volunteers in the Aviation Preservation Society of Scotland, to the 40th anniversary of the wonderful Can Do, and the brilliant panto currently being put on by the Brunton Theatre Trust, charities enrich every aspect of our lives.
However, I want to give a particular mention to the Foodbanks and other local food initiatives across South Scotland which continue to deal with significant demand for emergency food parcels. While the scourge of food poverty must and will be tackled, it is reassuring to know that such a dedicated charity is providing help to those who need it, for as long as they need it.
And as we break for the festive holidays, I wish everyone in communities across South Scotland a very happy and joyful Christmas and a peaceful and relaxing New Year.
