A new campaign led by the energy sector Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) Taskforce and overseen by Ofgem has been launched to highlight the urgent need for RTS customers to book the installation of a new meter as soon as their energy supplier contacts them.
The campaign explains what the RTS service is and how households and businesses can identify if they have an RTS meter. It also outlines the potential consequences of not upgrading, including possible disruption to heating and hot water, and higher energy bills. If you have not yet heard about the RTS switch-off, Ofgem has a short explainer video here.
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) helps manage peak and off-peak electricity rates for older meters, especially those using electric storage systems and heaters. From June 2025, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will be switched off, affecting 650,000 homes and businesses in Great
Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).
Martin Whitfield MSP said:
“This campaign highlights the fact that energy consumers using the old RTS meters only have six months left to install a new meter. This affects thousands of households and it is important that if you are unsure if you are affected or you need advice on how to change your meter, that you seek help as soon as possible.”
