Martin Whitfield MSP has today raised a mug in support of Macmillan’s Coffee Morning and is encouraging constituents across South Scotland to do the same.
The official Coffee Morning date is Friday 24th September but it can be held at any time. From a group in the garden, sharing a coffee over a screen or a takeaway cake and cuppa, you can hold yours however you like.
The charity fundraiser sees millions of pounds donated every year to help support people affected by cancer. The money raised helps fund Macmillan services across Scotland to make sure people living with cancer can access the physical, emotional and financial support they need.
Nearly all (98%) of Macmillan’s funding comes directly from donations, but disruption caused by Covid-19 means demand for its services is high, while fundraising remains challenging. The charity estimates it could see a combined £40 million drop in its Coffee Morning income across 2020 and 2021.
Speaking about his support for the annual fundraiser, Martin Whitfield MSP said:
“Macmillan is out there in our communities, offering vital care and support to people living with cancer and to their loved ones. That’s why I’m delighted to be supporting the charity’s Coffee Morning event again this year.
“Coronavirus has had a significant impact on the lives of people living with cancer and support from Macmillan is needed now more than ever. Everyone knows someone among their family, friends or community who benefits from Macmillan’s support and the Coffee Morning is a great opportunity to back its work.
“I’m proud to raise a mug today to support the event, to encourage donations and help let people know that while it might be different, virtual or socially distanced this year, everyone can take part in Coffee Morning in their own way.”
Janice Preston, Macmillan Head of Partnerships in Scotland said:
“When the pandemic hit, it turned life upside down for people across Scotland and around the world. But cancer hasn’t gone away and people need our support more than ever.”
“The cancer care system is under serious pressure, despite the best efforts of hard-working NHS staff, and we are working hard to ensure people get the care and support that they need.”
“Every penny that is raised will go to ensuring that people living with cancer do not become the forgotten “c” of the pandemic.”
