This year’s Marine Conservation Society Great British Beach Clean will take place from the 15th – 24th of September on beaches across the UK and Channel Islands.

Last year, over 5,000 volunteers helped pick up and survey over 141,048 pieces of litter, weighing almost four tonnes.

Martin Whitfield MSP is supporting the event this year and encouraging groups and individuals across the South Scotland Region to consider participating.

Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“The Great British Beach Clean is an important opportunity for communities to take action on clearing litter from their local beaches and coastline. However, these events are more than just clean-ups. Every year, the amazing volunteers who join in record the litter they collect and share it with the Marine Conservation Society.

“The data collected has been used to support important policy changes, including the carrier bag charges across the UK, bans on single-use plastic items, and commitments to circular economy policies. I hope people across South Scotland will join in with this year’s beach cleans and help remove more litter from our beautiful local beaches.”
