On Monday 9th June Martin Whitfield MSP visited Preston Lodge High School and spoke to S2 and Higher pupils, and students in the Rights Respecting Schools (RRS) pupils’ group about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The UNCRC was integrated into Scots law with the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024. The 2024 Act requires legislation, and the actions of public bodies, to be consistent with the provisions of the UNCRC.

The RRS group aims to ensure that the school community puts equality, participation, dignity, respect and non-discrimination at the heart of everything the school does.

Commenting after the visit, Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak to so many enthusiastic and engaged young people at Preston Lodge High School.

“Ensuring that young people’s voices are heard in a meaningful way about decisions that affect them is enshrined under Article 12 of the UNCRC, as is their right to be informed of the rights that the UNCRC confers under Article 42.

“I was really impressed by the knowledge and passion of the students from throughout the school and, in particular, the members of the RRS group.

“I am looking forward to seeing the pupils and teachers continue their great work in discussing and promoting the UNCRC and human rights more broadly.”
