Martin Whitfield MSP joined a panel discussion with GTC Scotland, the independent regulator for teachers, to celebrate 60 years of trusted teaching in Scotland.

Mr Whitfield, who was a teacher prior to his election and is a former Council Member of GTC Scotland, met with the regulator at its evening reception in Holyrood to discuss the future of teaching and how to create the conditions for teaching standards to be at the heart of education.

The reception was held in the Scottish Parliament to give politicians a chance to talk to GTC Scotland about their work to enhance trust in teaching and improve understanding of the regulator’s role and responsibilities.

Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“As a teaching professional and former Council Member of GTC Scotland, I was pleased to attend its reception and help celebrate this significant milestone for teaching in Scotland.

“Having seen its work up close, I know how important GTC Scotland is to maintaining and advancing teaching standards across Scotland and look forward to continuing the debate on the future of the profession and its critical importance to education.”

Dr Pauline Stephen, Chief Executive and Registrar at GTC Scotland, said:

“2025 marks 60 years of teaching being a profession in Scotland. Over six decades a strong framework for trusted teaching has been built but some core challenges remain. We believe that the response to these challenges must ensure that high teaching standards are championed and supported.”
