Biomedical Science Day is taking place today (Thursday 8th June) and Martin Whitfield MSP is adding his thanks to the UK’s dedicated biomedical laboratory staff for their vital role #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.

Now in its seventh year, Biomedical Science Day is the biggest annual celebration of biomedical scientists and laboratory staff.  Each year hundreds of NHS hospitals and private healthcare laboratories organise events in their local hospitals or schools to raise awareness of their vital work.

Martin Whitfield MSP said:

“Biomedical scientists and laboratory staff undertake a really crucial role in our healthcare system, but one which often goes largely unseen by the public and decision-makers.

“They analyse a remarkable 1.5 billion samples every year, providing other healthcare professionals with essential scientific information that allows them to make informed clinical decisions.

“I particularly welcome this year’s emphasis on involving and empowering children and young people in biomedical science and helping connect young patients with laboratory staff.”

Debra Padgett, President of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), said:

“It’s going to be an amazing Biomedical Science Day. The IBMS recently took over the Harvey’s Gang initiative so we’re hoping to see lots of children’s lab tours taking place this year.

“They are a really great way of empowering young long-term patients and helping laboratory staff put a face to the name they see on their samples.”
