Hosting Together SACR reception
Martin Whitfield MSP has hosted a parliamentary reception for Together, an alliance of Scottish children's charities that works to improve the awareness, understanding and implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The reception brought together several of the more than 500 members of the alliance for the launch of its new Strategic Plan 2024-2032. The new plan progresses from UNCRC Scotland incorporation to implementation. Living Wage reaches 3,500 milestone
This week Living Wage Scotland is celebrating reaching the milestone of 3,500 Living Wage accredited employers in Scotland. The real Living Wage has made a huge difference to thousands of workers and their families. The network of accredited employers in Scotland have now put £485 million into the pockets of low paid workers. Team’s success marked by Holyrood motion
A National Championship win by Haddington Athletic FC's Youth Section Autistic and Neurodiverse team has been marked at the Scottish Parliament by Martin Whitfield MSP. The team won the championship on Sunday 17th March at the Falkirk Stadium, after winning four out of five games, with the fifth a draw. It was only the second tournament the team had entered. Promoting ‘Healthy Know How’ campaign
Martin Whitfield MSP is is helping to promote NHS 24’s spring campaign ‘Healthy Know How’. The health campaign highlights the need to be prepared for common illnesses and ailments at home, while also reminding the public to check that they have enough prescription medication to last over the Easter weekend. Marking Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month takes place every March and Martin Whitfield MSP is again supporting efforts to promote awareness of its symptoms. Around 600 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year in Scotland and yet symptoms awareness remains worryingly low with just 23 per cent of women able to name bloating as a symptom. Awareness of symptoms is key to improving early diagnosis, but charities like Target Ovarian Cancer are also keen to address the misconceptions around ovarian cancer to ensure more women experiencing symptoms visit their GP. Supporting Young Carers Action Day
Today (Wednesday 13th March) is Young Carers Action Day, organised and led by Carers Trust to raise awareness of young carers. This year's theme is Fair Futures for Young Carers. The day will focus on building a more equal future for young carers and removing barriers that many of their peers do not face. Carers Trust have spoken to hundreds of young carers, including at the Scottish Young Carers Festival and the overarching theme young carers wanted to talk about was their futures.
